Since you are going to learn the Śiva Mahāpurāṇa, get a printed copy of the same, especially the Vidyeśvara Saṁhitā.
- Treat this as the body of Śiva and keep it wrapped on a silk cloth when not in use. Keep it in the pūjā place
- Some prefer keeping it on a book stand for reading purposes also
- Keep this book as ‘icon’ of Lord Śiva for worship as we start the process of daiva upāsana
- You can keep other books also for the pūjā like Veda, Purāṇa, Guru Granth Sahib etc. But they must be spiritual books associated with your religion. Not physics, chemistry and such books.
Recite this prayer once with a flower in your hand. After recitation, place the flower on the book.

yasyāḥ śravaṇamātreṇa pāpīyānapi muktibhāk|| 2-39
Take your rudrākṣa mala and recite this Sāmba Sadāśiva chaturdaśa mantra 108 times.
om bhūrbhuvasvaḥ sāmba-sadāśivāya namaḥ
Take the flower that was offered to the books and place it on your right ear.
Part-2 : Detailed Puja
When one realises that the Holy Śivapurāṇa is really Śiva Himself, then we start doing these additional prayers to the Śivapurāṇa. These prayers remove all faults and flaws we may encounter while doing the puja as well as in our spiritual path. These sloka have to be recited once at the time of worship of the Śivapurāṇa, and a flower must be offered. If flower is not available, then imagine you are offering a choicest flower to the Śivapurāṇa.
श्रवणार्थं स्वीकृतोऽसि सन्तुष्टो भव वै मयि॥
śrīmacchivapurāṇākhyaḥ pratyakṣastvaṁ maheśvaraḥ|
śravaṇārthaṁ svīkṛto’si santuṣṭo bhava vai mayi||
Translation: Thou art the holy Śiva purāṇa, the veritable personification of Maheśvara Himself. May thou be satisfied [pleased] with me and permit the hearing [of thy words].
निर्विघ्नेन सुसम्पूर्णं कथाश्रवणमस्तु मे॥
manoratho madīyo’yaṁ kartavyaḥ safalastvayā|
nirvighnena susampūrṇaṁ kathāśravaṇamastu me||
Translation: May thou fulfil this desire of listening the complete Śiva purāṇa without any obstruction or fault.
कर्मग्राहगृहीतङ्गो दासोऽहं तव शंकर॥
bhavābdhimagnaṁ dīnaṁ māṁ samuddhara bhavārṇavāt|
karmagrāhagṛhītaṅgo dāso’haṁ tava śaṁkara||
Translation: I am enslaved by the crocodile of karmic bondages. O Śaṅkara! Save this servant of yours from drowning in the ocean of saṅsāra.
